About FACTS

What is FACTS?

FACTS is the Foundation for Applied Construction Technology for Students. The Foundation supports the Student Built House Project. In 1981, the Superintendent and the Board of Education of Prince George’s County Public Schools invited local business owners in the community to partner in developing a “Student-Built” House Program. There was an immediate response from the private sector resulting in the formation of the “Construction Trades Foundation”, which was developed the same year. Members of the business community work closely with students, which provides a mentoring relationship with the construction trades students.

How Does FACTS Work?

FACTS is overseen by a Board of Directors from the greater Washington, DC area who reect all aspects of the construction industry. The Foundation secures land by purchase or donation. As a result, single family houses are built and sold to the general public. Students, under the supervision of school sta‑, are responsible for the construction of the house including carpentry, masonry, plumbing, heating, electrical, and air conditioning. Before going on the market for sale, the completed model home is decorated by students from the Interior Design Program of the Family and Consumer Sciences Program. Following a year-long competition between high schools that enter the design contest, each room of the house is decorated and furnished for the house dedication and open house program.
